SEED OF KINDNESS EVENT!

Happy New Year!  We’re starting off the year by celebrating National Bird Day this coming Friday, January 5th.  In recognition of this day we will be Sowing Seeds of Kindness by donating ten percent of all seed sales to Ontario Wildlife Rescue Centres!

National Bird Day reminds us of our responsibility to help protect our native and migratory birds.  Did you know that Canada is home to over 450 bird species?  Many Canadians, both professionals and people just like us, observe this day through educational events, bird counts and bird watching activities.  A bird count was held in Durham on December 30.  One of the team leaders for this event was our own team member Frank Dempsey from our Pickering Store!

This day also reminds us of the challenges birds face – deforestation, climate change and habitat loss.  Our feathered friends also play a significant role in maintaining environmental balance.  Some of the benefits they provide for us are pollination, seed dispersal and insect control.

You can also learn more about birds by following Birds Canada.  This is our national organization dedicated to bird conservation.  Their mission is to ‘increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of birds in Canada’.

If you would like to partake in sowing seeds of kindness, please visit one of our store locations this Friday and purchase seed for your birds.  Sunflower seeds, either black oil or sunflower hearts, peanuts, as well as suet all help our birds endure the cold winter months.  We are also offering 40 percent off of our Wildlife Rescue Calendars!  We look forward to seeing you!

Happy Birding
